About

For painters, or artists of any type for that matter, the name Provincetown conjures up the greats of the past 100 years. It is a town filled to the rafters with ghosts of earlier eras that shaped the present. In the town’s West End, Hans Hofmann taught a generation of abstract expressionists in his loft studio. Edward Hopper, Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock… they all spent time living and working in this city on the edge. Provincetown, for better or worse, was the “it” town for artists then and remains a Mecca for fine arts today. Provincetown with its unique location at the very end of Cape Cod, it is a haven for many. The natural beauty of Cape Cod –– and the unique light that can be found in Provincetown combine in a special way, making this town a magnet for artists from all over the world.

Beginning in January 2026, the gallery space will be acquired by Ali Gray, who will launch The Ali Gray Gallery in spring 2026.

Since its founding in 2014, the Stewart Clifford Gallery has been a prominent venue dedicated to the visual arts. Its thoughtfully curated exhibitions have featured painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media designed to extend the experience of exploring the natural world through art.

“The Stewart Clifford Gallery has been my passion for many years,” said Stewart Clifford, owner and curator. “It has been an honor to represent such talented artists and to share their work with Provincetown’s vibrant community of collectors and visitors. I am thrilled that Ali Gray will continue the tradition of supporting local and regional artists in this space, and I look forward to seeing how the Ali Gray Gallery evolves in the years to come.”

The Ali Gray Gallery will feature work by several artists who have exhibited with the Stewart Clifford Gallery, ensuring continuity for longtime patrons. It will also showcase artwork by her wife, Julie Gray, alongside new and emerging artists from Provincetown and across New England.

“I am deeply honored to carry forward the legacy of this beautiful space,” said Ali Gray. “My vision is to create an inspiring environment that highlights the process of each artist and celebrates the creativity and community that define Provincetown’s art scene.”
